Congratulations on booking your branding session!

You may be wondering what comes next and how to ensure your images turn out exactly as you envision them. Don’t worry; we are here to guide you to ensure you have a successful photo shoot. Let’s dive in to help you prepare for your photo shoot and ensure your images are everything you hoped for!

Pre-Session Planning

Plan, plan, and plan some more. Preparation will ensure you get the best photos possible and, most importantly, minimize your stress on the day of your session. Here are some things to consider as you plan:

Define Your Brand Identity and Messaging

You must have a defined brand identity and message to get the right feel, evoke emotions, and tell your brand’s story. Consider what you want your photographer to capture and how you want those images to look and feel. Communicate your ideas with your photographer to ensure your visions are aligned.

Maintain Open Communication

Keep the lines of communication open with your photographer. If there is an aesthetic you like, a style you want to emulate, or an emotion you wish to rouse in your audience, tell your photographer so they can capture the heart of your brand and create images that strike a chord with your audience.

Create an Image Map

Do your best to determine how you will use your images. Think about how many pictures you will need, where you will use them, and on which sites. For more about how to think about your images, check out this blog article. (Link to ‘How Many Photos Do You Actually Need?’)

Knowing how you will use your images helps maximize their effectiveness and guarantees you will use them well.

Logistics

This is where it gets fun and exciting. These details will make your brand shine.

Location – Choose a location that enhances your brand and aligns with your identity. Check out my previous blog (link to the blog from January 10th) to learn more about the importance of location and how to scout a great one.

Clothing – The number of outfits needed will depend on the length of your photo shoot, but bring a couple of outfit changes to give your images different vibes. Select clothing that empowers you and makes you feel confident. Additionally, ensure all clothing is cleaned, ironed, and well-fitted, and complements you and your brand.

Props – Props provide context and depth to your images. What items do you use or make that can help tell your story? Sometimes, location determines props, while at other times, the props you want to use will determine your location.

Weather and Timing – What type of light are you looking for? Bright midday sunlight? Early morning? Lighting significantly impacts the mood and messaging conveyed in your images.

Hair and Makeup – If you are working with new hair and makeup professionals, consider a hair and makeup trial, or at the very least, provide clear instructions on the desired aesthetic and hairstyle. Determine whether your hair and makeup can be done on location.

The Day Of Your Photo Shoot

After meticulous planning, it’s time for everything to go smoothly. Here are a few tips for a successful day:

Confidence

Psych yourself up. Listen to your favorite music on the way to your photo shoot. Talk to your best friend or someone who will make you laugh. Feeling confident will radiate through your images.

Posing

Practice different poses and expressions in front of a mirror. Learn how to best showcase your brand and personality through posing.

Props

Pack your props the night before to reduce last-minute stress and have one less thing to think about on the day of your photoshoot.

Conclusion

Branding photos are an investment, and careful planning and preparation are key to achieving impactful images that align with your brand message and identity. Your planning will ensure the day is a success, so stay confident, have fun, and smile!
