Cate’s senior session was the perfect reminder that timing is everything and sometimes stretching the season just a little bit pays off in the best way.

Cate knew she wanted a beach session, but instead of peak summer crowds and blazing heat, she chose to schedule toward the end of beach season. The water? Definitely chilly. The vibes? Absolutely immaculate. There’s something about late-summer beach light that feels softer, calmer, and a little more magical and Cate leaned all the way into it.

We headed to Wingaersheek Beach in Gloucester, which (no surprise here) was still buzzing with people who had the exact same idea. Families, couples, photographers… everyone chasing that golden-hour glow. But that’s the beauty of shooting with intention: we moved, adapted, and always found pockets of space that felt effortless and serene. You’d never know how busy it was from her final gallery.

Cate brought her parents and little brother along for the adventure, which made the session feel even more special. I always love when families come along, it adds to the energy and gives seniors a built-in support system. And because everyone was already there and accounted for, we took advantage of the moment and snagged a family photo too. Those are the images that tend to grow more meaningful with time.

The sunset showed up in full force that night… soft, warm, and glowing in all the right ways. And Cate? She was down for anything. The kind of senior who trusts the process completely. I’m fairly certain she would’ve laid down in the water if I had suggested it… but don’t worry, I’m not that wild. Still, her openness made the session so fun and creative.
We ended up going over time because inspiration just kept striking and honestly, the beach has a way of making you forget to check the clock. When the light is right and the energy is good, you lean in and let it unfold.

Once again, I walked away amazed at this generation’s ability to take direction and feel emotion in front of the camera. The subtle smiles, the soft neutral expressions, the effortless shifts between moods, it’s impressive. I can’t say I’ve ever nailed a “neutral face” without looking slightly unapproachable, so truly… hats off to these seniors for being both expressive and ridiculously photogenic.

Cate’s session was equal parts relaxed, joyful, and beautifully in-the-moment. Proof that chilly water, a busy beach, and going a little over time can still result in something really special.
